Even if you saw “Is This a Room” when Satter’s company, Half Straddle, premiered it Off Off Broadway at the Kitchen in January 2019, or at the Vineyard Theater later that year, its drama would not be diminished now.
Tveit plays Bobby, the 35-year-old bachelor who learns, from his friends, how to commit to the idea of marriage. Company marks the actor’s second Sondheim show but the first real stage role in his career that has him playing an adult.
The musical closes with Robert’s friends waiting to give him his cake for his birthday, but do not notice Robert hiding in another room. The friends all leave, realizing he wants to be left alone and leave the cake. When they leave, Robert grabs the cake and blows out the candles alone, ending the show.
“Company,” with music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by George Furth, first ran on Broadway in 1970 (and won the Tony for best musical the following year). The nonlinear show is about a single person, just turning 35, feeling pressure to settle down from paired-off friends.
