Is Morte d’Arthur an epic?

In 1833, Tennyson proposed to write a long epic about King Arthur, the legendary British leader who resisted the Anglo-Saxon invaders of sixth-century England. By 1838, he had completed one of the twelve books, entitled “Morte d’Arthur,” which chronicled the king’s death (“morte”).

Over the past fifty years, critics have classified the Morte Darthur as a unified tragedy, a series of single romances, and even as a prose romance cycle; however, with each argument in defense of one category, arguments in favor of the others convincingly refute the first.

Jealousy, Competition, and Revenge. The book largely supports and defends the ideals of honor and chivalry, but these ideals are then often contrasted with the actions of many knights who fail to live up to them.

The cross was inscribed “Here lies buried the renowned King Arthur, with Guinevere his second wife, in the isle of Avalon…”. The style and wording of the lead cross inscription convinced medieval people that this was the grave of Arthur. It is now believed that the cross was a forgery of an earlier artefact.

As Arthur lay dying, his last request was that the sword Excalibur and the scabbard be thrown back into the lake from whence they came. Out of the mists of the lake, three Fairy Queens appeared. They placed Arthur’s body on a barge, and sailed off with him to the mystical island of Avalon to cure him of his wounds.

One of these knights was Sir Lancelot. He was Arthur’s best friend. But unfortunately, Lancelot was also in love with King Arthur’s wife, Guinevere. And because Lancelot was the best looking and most chivalrous knight in the kingdom, Guinevere couldn’t resist his allure.

Excalibur is a legendary sword, in the mythology of Great Britain. It was owned by King Arthur. The sword and its name have become very widespread in popular culture, and are used in fiction and films. Excalibur is a symbol of divine kingship and great power.

Counting down to Valentine’s Day, we are reminiscing famous love stories. The tragic love story of Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere is probably one of the best-known stories of Arthurian Legend. Lancelot fall in love with Queen Guinevere, King Arthur’s wife.

Lancelot’s name first appeared as one of Arthur’s knights in Chrétien de Troyes’s 12th-century romance of Erec, and the same author later made him the hero of Lancelot; ou, le chevalier de la charrette, which retold an existing legend about Guinevere’s abduction, making Lancelot her rescuer and lover.

Despite Arthur’s extraordinary importance to the novel, however, he is a fairly simple character. As a child, Arthur (then called the Wart) is honest, trusting, modest, and good-hearted, and he preserves these qualities when he becomes king.

Arthur remains a good & noble king until the affair of his queen & best friend is revealed by his son Mordred. Throughout all these adventures there are a number of times Guinevere is kidnapped by some menacing lord and has to be rescued or other ladies are in distress and also need the assistance of a noble knight.

In the final book of Morte D’Arthur, Gawain explicitly refers to Mordred as a “false traytoure.” In the moment when Mordred takes the throne from Arthur, Mordred is “the incarnation of treason.” He betrays Arthur as both his knight and his son, committing two acts of treason simultaneously.

According to Geoffrey of Monmouth though, who calls Sir Mordred, Modred, Guinevere assists Modred of her own accord, in helping him usurp the throne from Arthur and ultimately betray him. Later on, writers would exonerate Queen Guinevere, and say she was forced against her will to help Modred.

Guinevere is the only known servant to have married into a noble family. Since Morgana’s betrayal, Guinevere is the only female within Arthur’s inner circle and is the ‘mother’ of the Knights of the Round Table and Merlin.

The first code Lancelot breaks is in the first chivalric virtue, Hair Play. The code states that a knight should avoid cheating. Lancelot breaks this code when he falls in love with Queen Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur.

Why does King Arthur not accept Launcelot’s offer of peace? He does not forgive Launcelot. Sir Gawain advises against it. It is motivated by chivalry.

“HIC IACET ARTHURUS, REX QUONDAM REXQUE FUTURUS” means. “Here lies Arthur, the once and future king.“
