What are metro areas in Australia?

Australia has 5 cities with more than a million people, 14 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 375 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people.

The metropolitan areas are the state and territory capital city statistical divisions (SDs) plus other statistical subdivisions (SSDs) or groups of SSDs which include urban centres of population 100 000 or more in size. There are two metropolitan categories.

Introduction. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) defines Major Urban Areas as those cities with a population exceeding 100,000 people (ABS, 2011, p24). By this definition approximately 89% of Australia’s population live in Major Urban areas (World Bank, 2015).

Metro Satellites are relatively high-density communities on the outskirts of major centres of economic activity such as Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong and the Gold Coast. Metro Satellite FERs include towns such as Gosford, Queanbeyan, Maitland, Kiama, Lithgow and Tweed Heads.

A rural area is an open swath of land that has few homes or other buildings, and not very many people. A rural areas population density is very low. Many people live in a city, or urban area. Their homes and businesses are located very close to one another.

However, as per “The Constitution (seventy-fourth Amendment) Act, 1992”, it states 7 cities (NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai) to be considered as metro cities in India.
