Animals play a significant role in the celebration of the Chinese New Year. The dragon, lion, and Nian celebrate new beginnings during the Spring Festival. The twelve animals of the zodiac represent the passage of time, and the cycle of years.
There are 12 Chinese zodiac signs, in the following order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each sign is named after an animal, and each animal has its own unique characteristics.

1. Rat. According to legend, in the competition held by the Jade Emperor to decide the zodiac animals, the quick-witted rat asked the diligent ox to take him on a ride to cross the river and jumped down before the ox crossed the finish line, so the rat won the race and became the first of the zodiac animals.
