I think it’s popular because it’s a quirky film that shows the idealized life of a Parisian living near Montmartre. Audrey Tautou did a great job acting and it’s a bit friendly for beginners of French. I know that the film is used in French classes around the USA. Simple exposure helps for the popularity of films.
