Located about 25 miles south of San Francisco, Mavericks sits just about two miles off shore from the Pillar Point Harbor, and just north of the town of Half Moon Bay, at Princeton-by-the-Sea, a small coastal village. Unfortunately shore viewing is not available for live fans due to permit restrictions.
When Mavericks is going on between Nov to March, you may luck out during the weekdays. As you walk from the lot, there are some tide pools along the path to the beach. You can see the waves and surfers better taking the path to the cliff, above the beach.

Mavericks in Half Moon Bay definitely has the largest break in California. Waves at this specific location can be as high as 60 feet when conditions are perfect and 20-30 foot waves are common in winter. Unique underwater formations create this crazy wave which breaks both left and right.
On November 11, 2011, US surfer Garrett McNamara was towed by Andrew Cotton into a massive wave at Nazaré. At the time, the 78-foot (23,8-meter) wave entered history as the largest wave ever surfed, as acknowledged by Guinness World Records at the time.
To find Mavericks from Highway 1, drive through the Half Moon Bay community of Princeton-By-The-Sea, then turn north onto West Point Avenue and continue to the Pillar Point Marsh parking lot at the end of the road. From the parking area hike down the trail to the harbor and turn right.

One of Hawaii’s premier big wave spots, Peahi, also referred to as Jaws, went off earlier this week on Maui. Over the past few days, Peahi, which is more commonly referred to as Jaws, on Maui’s north shore has seen waves of epic proportions.
As far as I’m concerned, three feet is the perfect size for a wave. It’s big enough that you can ride a shortboard and still have some decent faces to work with, but it’s small enough to bust out the longboard and work on your nose-riding without worrying about bouncing your head off the reef.
