The huge mansion, where Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford) hosts his extravagant, jazz-age parties, is in Newport itself. It’s Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue, an imitation of the Petit Trianon at Versailles, built in 1909 by the Oelrich family (or by their builders, I presume).

Located at 235 Middle Neck Road in Sands Point, New York, the estate was purchased in 1923 by Mary Harriman Rumsey, daughter of railroad magnate EH Harriman and sister of 48th Governor of New York W.

F. Scott Fitzgerald placed his hero in this home in The Great Gatsby. Now it’s being sold by James Mai, a financial whiz made immortal in The Big Short for having foreseen the 2008 financial crisis.

Great Neck, New York (aka West Egg) Great Neck refers to a peninsula along the north shore of Long Island, as well as a part of the south peninsula and the border to Queens. It’s home to a few different villages, including the Village of Kings Point and the more opulent Manor Haven/Sands Point.

“West Egg” was really the Kings Point end of the Great Neck peninsula. “East Egg” was really the Sands Point end of the Port Washington peninsula. The peninsulas are home to the wealthy (Murphy, 2010). The “valley of ashes” was a trash burning area between Great Neck and Manhattan (Asher 2010).

Sands Point is often thought to have be renamed by Fitzgerald as East Egg, the place where old established money lived and not new flashy millionaires like Gatsby. West Egg which was the location of Gatsby’s mansion would have been Great Neck, which is the next town west, where Fitzgerald actually lived.

He earned it by bootlegging alcohol, which as we all know was illegal because of the prohibition of alcohol during the time of this book, and he also earned a lot of his money from fake stocks. Even though Jay Gatsby didn’t earn his money honestly, he was a very honest man when it came to what he wanted.

Well, old sport, now you can live that West Egg fantasy life. This over the top mansion on Long Island was the inspiration for the titular character’s estate in the 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. And the price? You’ll need Gatsby’s fortune to match, because this place is listed for $85 million.

Daisy Buchanan’s house was inspired by the real world ‘Old Westbury Gardens‘ with the exteriors built on a soundstage and extra ‘enhancements’ added digitally through postproduction.

Because the green light hangs at the end of Daisy’s dock, and Gatsby bought his house in order to be able to see it each night, the green light most obviously symbolizes his unwavering love for Daisy.

For Gatsby, who has spent the past five years dreaming of Daisy, one wonders whether through the five years he was in love with Daisy, or the idea of Daisy.

We learn from Nick about Gatsby’s true origins. His real name is James Gatz. He comes from North Dakota. At the age of 17 he changed his name to Jay Gatsby after meeting a rich mining prospector called Dan Cody.

How has Gatsby gotten some of his money, and what does Tom say that startles Gatsby? He and Wolsheim bought a lot of streetside drug stores and sold grain alcohol over the counter. Tom also says Gatsby has something big going on but Walter Chase won’t tell him because he’s afraid Wolfsheim will kill him.

East and West Egg are Cow Neck and Great Neck, respectively, two peninsulas of Nassau County that border Manhasset Bay. … The point to the right is Sands Point East Egg—a village at the end of Cow Neck. This is where Fitzgerald placed Daisy Buchanan’s residence with the infamous green light.
