Cranick is the man who stows away on the Seahawk in order to seek revenge on Captain Jaggery. He has only one arm since, on the Seahawk’s last voyage, Captain Jaggery beat his arm off (4.51). Cranick is unsuccessful in the mutiny plot and dies by Captain Jaggery’s hand (he shoots Cranick in the chest).
Zachariah was chosen to take the punishment for the mutiny for two reasons. First, he was Charlotte’s friend. Captain Jaggery chose to punish Zachariah as a way of getting at Charlotte for not telling him about her suspicions earlier. Second, Zachariah stood up to Jaggery after he shot Cranick.

Who saves Charlotte from falling? Zachariah.
They had both seen Captain Jaggery and Mr. Hollybrass arguing during the storm. In fact, Zachariah says, “I heard Hollybrass accuse the captain of deliberately taking the Seahawk into the storm.” “Jaggery was enraged,” he continues.
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, though, is also a work of historical fiction, which means that the plot is not set in the 1990s, or even in the present day. Charlotte Doyle’s story instead unfolds against the larger social upheavals of the nineteenth century.
Zachariah gives Charlotte the dirk (a knife) for protection and sews for her a miniature set of sailor clothes. Unlike Captain Jaggery or her father, Zachariah presents himself not as Charlotte’s superior, but as her equal. He becomes a trustworthy friend and a loyal mentor.

She finds Zachariah, who convinces her to join him in tea and something to eat. She learns that she was sick for four days. Charlotte tries to give the knife back to Zachariah. Zachariah tells her that there may come a time where she would want the knife, since the ship is under the control of Captain Jaggery.
Charlotte decides to try one more time after putting on the clothes that Zachariah gives her before his death. She presents her case to the whole crew on the advice of Fisk. They decide that if she can climb up to the highest mast on the ship, she will be allowed to join the crew.
What does Charlotte do after Cranick is shot and Zachariah is whipped? She joins the crew.
They thought he was nervous and fidgety and kind of gives Charlotte the creeps. Zachariah and Charlotte plot the second mutiny with Keetch, but they don’t realize that old Keetch has actually been in cahoots with the captain this whole time.
The threatening behavior of the crew is frightening her, and she thinks Captain Jaggery is the only one who can protect her. So, she tells him what she overheard when she was outside the forecastle, and tells Jaggery about the pistol and round robin she found inside the forecastle, and the stowaway.
Charlotte believed her life was saved during the hurricane because Zachariah appeared on mask and saved her before she was about to give up and fall.
Dressed in her sailing clothes, Charlotte convinces Fisk that she is serious about joining the crew. He warns her that the rest of the crew will not be open to it, and the two go to the forecastle to tell the idea to the men. She agrees, and the men go to the rest of the crew to inform them. …
The Climax, the Turning Point. Captain Jaggery ordered for Zachariah to take the punishment for Cranick and receive 50 lashes. Charlotte finally realized Jaggery’s rage and cruelty. She threw herself on him to stop him from his unfair punishment to Zachariah, injuring and humiliating Jaggery.
Why did Charlotte suspect that Zachariah had murdered Hollybrass? He was on the deck and CJ would have never thought it was him. He is the only one who can get off the Seahawk and go to the authorities about CJ. 19.2.
