The northern extension line, which runs from Lira to Pakwach, will be re-opened to encourage new business opportunities. David Murobi, a URC director, led a delegation from the corporation on a fact-finding mission on the state of URC assets in Arua and Pakwach on Wednesday.

Built by the British government, and named for its ultimate destination, the Uganda Railway didn’t actually reach Uganda. Construction began in 1896 in the port city of Mombasa and continued its course northwest through today’s Kenya to its terminus on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria.
It only got worse from there. Construction on the 660-mile railway line was launched in 1896 in Mombasa and was completed, after many trials and tribulations, in Kisumu (then known as Port Florence, which was still part of Uganda at the time) on 20 December 1901.

UPDATE 2021: The Kampala commuter train service is now run by Uganda Railways Corporation. The passenger train takes four trips every weekday between Namanve and central Kampala. The 45-minute journey stops at Nakawa (MUBS), Spedag (zone 4), Kireka, Namboole and Namanve.

Main construction works on the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway line began in December 2014 with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) being the primary contractor. The railway line opened in 2017 and celebrated 1,000 days of operation in February 2020.

The express gives businesses and passengers a cheaper and safer alternative to the notoriously dangerous trip along the sometimes pot-holed single-lane highway between the two cities that is often clogged with cargo trucks.

Mombasa – Nairobi The inter-county (morning) train departs Mombasa at 8:00 am and takes five hours, forty two minutes arriving in Nairobi at 1:42 pm. The Express train leaves Mombasa at 3:15 pm and takes five hours arriving in Nairobi at 8:15 pm.
